Receding and Reemerging

Asian American Ballet Project’s 3rd annual performance, Receding and Reemerging, weaves together six original ballets that honor ancient folktales, confront painful histories, and unravel the complexities of Asian American identity. With original choreography, live music, and bold new interpretations, AABP offers a powerful artistic response to this moment. Featuring contributions by 18 Asian American artists, Receding and Reemerging invites audiences to imagine a future where Asian American experiences are not only seen—but celebrated.

Featured Works:

Spectre de la Rose - the 1911 Ballet Russes classic restaged inside a WWII Japanese American “assembly center,” challenging our nostalgia for “greater” pasts.

The Legend - A modern retelling of a Kazakh folktale pitting man against beast.

Mended Vespers - A contemporary exploration of connection, isolation, and desire during the pandemic.

Aigul -  An abstract representation of the origin story of the Kyrgyz moonflower highlighting individual strength and collective power.

Entwined Destinies - A duet capturing the Red Thread of Fate myth by exploring the journey of relationships through the interaction of two dancers and a red ribbon.

Gabi sa Gubat/Night Jungle - set in a Philippine forest filled with fantastical creatures, reflecting on the magnetism of shared cultural mythologies and how they capture the psyche.
